FAQ | What is an RSS Feed?
Filed Under Blogging, FAQ | 1 Comment
I’m known in circles to be a designer whose very patient and willing to answer questions. Even for folks I just hang out with online, I often get asked “tech” questions. Since it seems like some of the same questions have been asked over the past few months, I decided to start Friday FAQ. I will add a question along with my response at least 2-3 Fridays out of the month. Over the next month or so, I will concentrate on RSS Feeds and blogging.
Now, I work with a lot of newbies or people who are not comfortable with computers in general, that is my niche, so my responses will be very basic.
What is an RSS Feed?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. There are different types of feeds, but RSS is the most popular.
If you manage a blog or platform (audio, video) that is updated frequently, the feed provides a quick way for your visitors to subscribe to your content.
Visitorscan subscribe and view the content by:
1) Receiving the content through an aggregator.
Wikipedia says, “a feed aggregator, also known as a feed reader, news reader or simply aggregator, is client software or a Web application which aggregates syndicated web content such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts, and vlogs in a single location for easy viewing.”
This saves the reader from trying to keep a ton of blogs bookmarked. Popular aggregators are Google Reader (my favorite) and Bloglines.
2) Receiving the feed via email.
Email is still the most popular form of electronic communication and some individuals prefer to read RSS feeds in their inbox. Popular places that send feeds via email are feedblitz.com and feedburner.com.
